July Happenings

Yes, we are now officially grandparents! Ronin Kai was born on June 28th, weighing in at 8 ½ lbs. He is a handsome and delightful little fellow :-) and has already captured the hearts of his grandparents, great-grandparents, and aunts and uncles! Keilah & Jeremy are doing a great job at working through the transition of being parents: the joys and the responsibilities alike (like those sleepless nights!) They are also in the midst of packing as they begin missionary training in August in Missouri.

Our hearts are thankful not just for God’s gift of little Ronin, but also for the special time He gave us with our family. Kenny & Sophia joined us from Virginia for a week, and we were even able to sneak away for a few days in Maine with them. We helped Kimberly get her driver’s license and to pack up for her coming move to Missouri (where she will be working in childcare at the same place Keilah & Jeremy will be students, the Ethnos 360 Missionary Training Center.) God graciously allowed us a few minutes with my (Kevin’s) beloved Grandma Natalie Bruce before she passed into the presence of our Savior this week. Good-byes are difficult, but our hearts are comforted in knowing that God is in control and we look forward to an eternity in Heaven together!

We appreciate our co-workers Andy & Chrissy Shaub holding down the fort in Ecuador while we were gone. It was not a time without difficulty: Paulino’s newest grand-baby (just 2 months old!) died, and Gloria was hospitalized with an esophageal obstruction. Keeping the two church services going each week was an extra challenge as well. As we return and jump back into the ministry, we’d appreciate your prayers for God’s grace as we walk alongside the Awa believers as they go through such times of suffering.

    • Seeing God’s faithfulness in each of our kids’ lives has been such a special blessing; how thankful we are for the opportunity to spend time with them and welcome baby Ronin.
    • Roughly fifty Awa were able to be seen by the medical caravan just before we left.
    • As we head back to living among the Awa we are relying on God’s provision of strength for each day. How we need His help and His wisdom!
    • A steady presence in the ministry has been an important need in this time. In 2019 we face a special challenge as we work toward a time of furlough for both the Shaubs and us; thanks for joining with us in prayer that God would work this out while still allowing the Awa church to grow and mature.

June Update

On May 19th, Kimberly graduated with honors from Ethnos 360 Bible Institute! We were sad not to be with her that day, but glad that both Kevin's parents and Kenny & Sophia were there! Just after graduation, Kimberly got engaged to Zach Burt, a fellow MK and Ethnos 360 graduating student whose parents are missionaries in Thailand. :-) For the two years Kimberly has been at the Bible Institute, one of our prayers for her was for God's guidance for her future. She considered many options over the last few months, and has decided to take a job offered to her working in childcare at the Missionary Training Center of Ethnos 360 in Missouri. It seems like a good fit for her---she will be close to Keilah & Jeremy (who will be students there this coming year), as well as somewhat close to Zach (studying in Springfield, MO). We are thankful to see God's faithfulness in guiding her each step at a time!

It was a disappointment to have to cancel the visit from our friend Shelia and the medical caravan to our area this year, due to the local security concerns. Instead we are working out a plan to take a busload of Awa out to the city of Otavalo, so they can be attended there on June 15th. We pray the day is a blessing to many of the believers, as well as the other Awa with health needs they are inviting to come along.

Back in November we asked you to pray for our coworkers, Jorge and Mercedes Vera, and their daughter Angie who had been diagnosed with cancer. Over these last months, the Veras have maintained a steady testimony of a strong faith in God as Angie went thru six chemotherapy treatments. Jorge and Mercedes juggled their work with the small church in the village of San Pedro with helping Angie with her treatments in Quito. Angie's testimony remained cheerful and strong: "I believe this cancer is God's answer to my prayer that He would give me more opportunities to share about Him.” And she did share: in front of youth groups, with doctors and nurses, at her college. When Mercedes and Angie travelled to Quito recently for Angie's first radiation treatment, the doctor in charge was taken by surprise as she reviewed Angie's latest test results. "There is no cancer showing up here at all!" was the doctor's amazed pronouncement. "Well, Angie, just go and enjoy life!"

Mercedes shared a few days later in one of our Mission meetings: "We used to go to a church where we claimed miracles from God. But when God brought us to Puente de Amor (the Liebenzell church in Ibarra) we learned a new way of learning to trust and submit to God, not demanding of Him what we thought would be good, but bringing our troubles to Him and learning to trust in His provision. Some people said to us that Angie would be cured if we just had enough faith. And yes, we did pray for her healing, but mostly we just prayed that God would uphold us during the trial and supply the tools that we needed to stay strong in following Him through the trial. We trusted that He knew what was best for Angie, and we submitted ourselves to Him. So it really surprised us that God healed her in this way! When Angie first heard that her cancer was gone, her prayer in tears to God was: 'God, thank You. I never even asked you to heal me; I just asked that You would help me to faithfully trust You and to bear testimony of You to many people.'”

We are blessed to be able to work alongside Jorge and Mercedes and Angie and other Ecuadorians who have caught the vision of Who our God is, and desire to share His love with others!

Kathy and I are super excited to be making a trip to the USA June 19th - July 17th to welcome our first grandchild into our family! Keilah and husband Jeremy are expecting their first child (due June 25th) and then will be transitioning to study at the Missionary Training Center (Ethnos 360) in Missouri for the next two years. While there in New England, we will also be with Kimberly, before she also takes off for Missouri, and Kenny & Sophia hope to travel up from Virginia to see us for a few days as well. We feel quite blessed! Being a continent away from our kids is not always where we would like to be, but God has been faithful to answer our prayer that we could see them at least once a year! We are thankful!

May 2018 update

Wishing all of you a happy spring! Having the church functioning in Palmira has been a joy! Finishing up the weeks of construction and conference has allowed us to focus more on the PEOPLE God is bringing each Sunday. Having two services each week---first in Rio Verde, and then in Palmira--has made our Sundays a bit crazier :-) but has also brought new faces to join our fellowship. Oso (in the picture) is Paulino's uncle who lives just down the mountain from us. His wife Delfina has been attending church for over a year, joining us each Sunday in Rio Verde with a passel of grandkids. It was a joy to have Oso join her and the grandkids this month! Margarita has been coming to the service in Palmira, along with her son Omar. Her husband Ricardo has a colorful reputation, and at present is living with two wives. Margarita's face reflects a hard life. For both Oso and Margarita the Bible teaching is completely new--and from their point of view the teaching must be somewhat overwhelming! Please pray that God will give them ears to hear, and hearts (or livers! as the Awa say) to understand what they are hearing. Another concern is for the youth of Palmira. Abraham, Paulino's 15 year old son, is a typical Awa "musittu" (youth). He goes to school each week, although he puts more energy into the hours of soccer games rather than much actual schoolwork! :-) While there is always work on the family farm, there is little entertainment available. Most of the youth in Palmira live with much boredom; many marry young and there are a number of teenage single moms. We would like to reach out to these young folks in a wise and helpful way--please pray for wisdom in finding a good way to do this! March and April brought a higher level of crime and violence here in the northern part of the country. It would appear that several drug cartels are vying for control of the drug transportation corridor through this area. Bombs, bomb threats, land mines, clashes with the military, and kidnappings have all played a part in the chaos. While we are thankful for a peaceful zone in our immediate area, we are seeking God's wisdom in knowing what precautions we should take. We appreciate your prayers for this situation as well! 21st Awa Conference Photos!

Thank you for praying for the Awa Conference! We met with the believers on Friday, March 30th, and finished up the preparations. Close to 200 people joined us for a special meeting on Saturday celebrating the "Inauguration Day" of Diosta Paikum Yal, God's House of Prayer. Resurrection Sunday about 100 Awa came for our first regular church service. We were thankful for a good roof over our heads as it rained heavily every day! But food and smiles were plentiful! We are thankful for God's provision of this beautiful building, and pray that it truly will be a place where many Awa can meet God. Check out our online photo album of the Conference below!

Easter Conference!

In 1998 we held our first Awa Conference in Lita---twenty years ago! We won't quickly forget that conference---we had just returned from Quito having welcomed baby Kimberly into our family. :-) This year Kimberly is turning 20....and we are right in the midst of preparing for the 21st Awa Conference! And this year, for the first time, at the request of Paulino and others, Conference will be held in the community of Palmira, in the new church building.

There is much to be done in the coming two weeks! Excitement is building as we make all the final preparations--the cement 'maestros' are putting in doors and windows and ceramic tiles, many are helping to gather rocks to prepare for cementing the front porch, a kitchen roof needs to be put up, and there are benches to be made.

We'll be meeting with the believers on Friday, March 30th, and then on Saturday, March 31st, the believers are inviting the whole community of Palmira to join us for a special time of 'inauguration' for the new church building. "Diosta Paikum Yal" (God's House of Prayer)  will open with a special meeting day. A group of our Quichua friends have been invited to sing and share testimonies; and Paulino is looking for a cow to butcher, so that there will be plenty of food for all to enjoy. :-) Easter Sunday will be a quieter day, with just the smaller group of believers joining us.

We appreciate your prayers for this special time! There is much left to finalize. With all the rainy season wetness, the churchyard has been a soupy mess and even though the Awa are quite used to the mud, it is still hard to imagine a large crowd gathering there! We are praying that God will graciously send some drier weather before the end of the month. :-) And as we celebrate Jesus' resurrection, we pray that God would prepare the hearts of the Awa in Palmira for understanding the significance of this special time.

Happy New Year!

God has graciously allowed progress to continue on God's House of Prayer in Palmira community! This last week our Quichua friend Angel, his son Samuel, and friend Carlos (also a Quichua believer) worked hard to 'enlucir' (cement stucco) the walls, both inside and out. Just the back and sides of the outside of the building lack! In God's economy (which can run according to different rules than man's) :-) we were happy to use up the original funds--thus giving the Awa a chance to do their part and not just expect that funds will come from elsewhere to pay for everything. In talking with Guillermo, he offered to donate wood for free to build the benches and other furniture needed. "That's something I can give!" Guillermo said. Paulino also is ready to organize workers to build an Awa-style kitchen and an outhouse on the property. "I don't know how to do the stucco-ing, but I can certainly dig!" was his response.

And God is continuing to provide: A gift from a friend who came to visit helped finish up the last two weeks of cement work and materials; and our home church has offered a donation for the electric wiring, metal window frames and doors, a front porch, as well as the ceramic tiles for the floors. Last year at this time we hoped to build in time for Awa Conference---that didn't happen. But, Lord willing, the believers are excitedly planning this year's Conference to be held here at God's House of Prayer in Palmira! We will keep you updated on the progress as the weeks go by!

One area of struggle for us over the last year, since our source from the RV school was shut down, has been a connection to the Internet. We have some data access on our cell phones, but the Lita tower system is overloaded and we are too far away to connect well. We are thankful to be able to communicate with our kids via WhatsApp, a chat program that is used across Ecuador. But for most of our email and other Internet business we rely on our days we are out in the city of Ibarra twice a month. Along with our tech-savvy friend Miguel, I am working on a system of repeater antennas to try to get us better Internet access. The antenna here at our house is up and running; the one on our property in Lita is in place; now we just lack the one in the middle! That one is a bit more complicated: as we must make arrangements with the land owner, put up an antenna in just the right place, install a power source, and protect the equipment from theft.....just a few challenges! We'll see how the project unfolds, and we are thankful for your patience in the meantime as we have been rather behind in communications.

Many of you are taking part with us from afar in Milton's life, as he turns his heart and his life back in a God-ward direction. We recently passed the year-mark of the day when Milton pledged to return to faithfulness to his wife. We are thankful for a God who has been faithful over this year, not only in Milton's life, but also in the hearts of the rest of the church. As we move into this new year, we are also thankful for a faithful God. May you also find Him faithful in the weeks and months to come!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season to each of you!

"But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son..." Galatians 4:4 reminds us that God chose just the moment that He wanted for His Son to come and live among us. As a coworker reminded us this week, it was anything but an easy time for Mary and Joseph, and later on for Jesus as He lived out His mission of love and sacrifice for us here on earth. But how thankful we are for God's gift to us!

December was perhaps not the month we would have chosen to be building a church! And yet this has been the time that God allowed all the pieces to come together so that we were able to finally move ahead with the construction of "God's House of Prayer" in Palmira community. Although the building process has not been easy with much rain and mud and slippery roads, we have watched God work and are thankful for His help in the whole process.

So yes, there were definitely less Christmas decorations and glitter around our house this year, and alot more mud and mess! And 'making our lists, and checking them twice' was more along the line of 50 bags of cement, five truckloads of sand and gravel, and 1200 cement blocks....! But God has blessed us with much Christmas cheer :-) as we rejoice to see the construction taking shape. Working with the cement 'maestros' has also been a joy, as each of them are not just friends, but also fellow believers.

Our family was a bit scattered for the holiday season this year, with Kimberly staying at school to work over break, Kenny & Sophia in Virginia with Sophia's family, and Keilah & Jeremy happily traveling to West Virginia to spend a special Christmas with Jeremy's family (who are usually in Paraguay). But we certainly enjoyed opportunities to chat with each of them! As we look to the new year, and the new challenges that are to come we can rest in the fact that His grace is sufficient, and His power unlimited. We trust you also find this to be abundantly evident in your own lives in 2018!
